Ball lightning explained? by R. Colin Johnson

"... dozens of hypotheses have been offered to explain ball lightning, from Nikola Tesla's seminal 1904 treatise, 'The Transmission of Electrical Energy Without Wires,' to the most recent explanation offered by University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand) professors John Abrahamson and James Dinniss, that ball lightning is just vaporized silicon."
"Now researchers Antnio Pavo and Gerson Paiva of the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil claim to have verified the vaporized silicon hypothesis in their laboratory."

Take a look at a new mail I have sent on the list please.

It makes things much, much easier for me. You can not imagine how
helpfully it is :-)

It is good like it is now really. The main thing is there.

Some additional informations for you Bob:

Ball lightnings are only few millimeters (around 1/5"), which is very
small. But considering the scale of the coil, they are very big and
lasting very long. You see, when you notice the natural streamer, it
is obvious, that the ball lightnings are very small in a ratio to the
length of the streamer (they are only 11.8" - 20" approx.). For us,
they are huge. But the exact energy of such a streamer is very small
- it is only an impulse. In these coils, the energy is very strong and
repeatable.

My bigger coil (6kW) - streamers up to 7' long), will show ball
lightnings which will last to 5sec., which will be record time, and
they will last long enough to be examined in a controlled conditions
in a lab, after the external power is shut down. this is very
important. They will be like a golf ball in diameter, if not bigger
than this.

Streamers that I have sent you are almost in a scale to the real
model. So, you can see for yourself. Little smaller than that.

They can last (small as this), to 1sec. This is also very good,
considering the energy. I think personally, that this is the record
time of existence on such a small coil. It doesn't have enough energy
to fire up more air or carbon for bigger nucleus. But as bigger they
are, the time of their life is getting longer. So, people are usually
see ball lightnings during the natural discharges, for few
seconds. After that, they shrink, hit some other object... but
evidently last to 10sec. in a best case.

Like I have said: they are lasting for a small period that I can not
tell you anything more about the nature of their behavior. Something
you can find in the mail I have sent on the list now. But some of them
as you may see on the photos can last more, and move further from the
coil, in the same manner, to be captured by the camera as further
out. Sometimes, I shut down HV and they are still lasting for some
time (this is very rear thing, I always must repeat experiment to
achieve this - and this is due to the low power), and other close of
the switch again is making new streamers. Some of them are again
hitting the ball and it uses that energy to survive for a moment more,
and than disappear.

I have said also that they are some sort of stars :-) They have
initial fuel which they are spending through time, showing light and
radiation energy in the space around. After all the fueled from the
nucleus has been spent, they disappear in a form of supernovae. This
is only analogy... but it will be interesting to see whether there is
any relation at all between the stars and ball lightnings, or
not. Especially where do they go after they vanish? Is there any form
of matter still floating around? This is hard to show at this time,
especially because I do not have any measuring equipment - my methods
are different. Hardly that the regular ones could be used for this
purpose, as they can not for non-hertzian waves. They are moving
through the glass (windows), very easily, without breaking them or
leaving any form of distortion at all. This is also very strange.
They can move through matter!! But in the case of glass, it is
understandable, knowing the specific relation between the electrical
current and glass. Still, not quite.

This is the shortest I can offer for now. Later I will send you some
more information, and after some further experiments if you like to be
kept informed. [No further information was supplied.] But if you like
you can ask questions, it is much easier for me to answer then, knowing
what you are interested in. [Nele's last known email address is available on
request, it is not posted to prevent Spam.]

Oh, yes, I forgot to tell you about the coil: Secondary coil which you
can see is only 11,8" tall. That gives you the metrics of the
machine. If you like other specific characteristics of the coil
(frequency, wire,...., no problem).

I am taking pictures with a very old camera, using 100ASA 24DIN film.
Exposure time is from 1/125 to few seconds. It doesn't matter really,
when you are making these photographs in a dark room which is the best
by the way. You also need mechanical camera, not by any chance digital
one, or it will burn, because of the HV in the air. The scale is
almost right on the photos you can see on your screen.

It all depends on what you want to see. You can see that on some
photos, there are great amount of streamers and sparks, issuing from
the terminal. This is due to the higher exposure time. On other ones
in a contrary, you can see only few of them, this was important to
capture ball lightnings. But, maybe it would be the best to say that
all that looks much better in a real time :-)

Yes, I am very rarely on the list, maybe there was no subject for me
all that time. Now, someone has mentioned plasma balls. I have great
amount of experiments behind me about Tesla coils, mechanical
oscillators (earthquake machines), wireless power distribution...

Thanks Bob!

Regards,
Nele
